Jesus in Bethany

¹⁷ When Jesus arrived, he learned that Lazarus had already been dead and in the tomb for four days. [^CSome Jews believed that a soul would stay near a body for up to three days after death.] ¹⁸ Bethany was about two miles [^Lfifteen stadia; ^Ca stadion was about 600 ft.] from Jerusalem. ¹⁹ Many of the Jews had come there to ·comfort [console] Martha and Mary about their brother.
